Yekaterina Lubimova and Alisa Minkina, graduates of BA (Hons) Product Design programme, took second and third places in a prestigious contest held during Moscow furniture and interior exhibition I Saloni. The skills the two designers acquired while studying at the British Higher School of Art and Design helped them find unconventional solutions and win the hearts of the jury. In April Yekaterina and Alisa will travel to Milan where they will present their works at SaloneSatellite contest during Salone del Mobile.Milano furnishing fair.
Yekaterina Lubimova became passionate about creating furniture that complements indoor plants such as cactuses. A cactus in a pot is a common feature on many office desks due to its ability to absorb electromagnetic waves from electronic devices and computer displays. Yekaterina’s idea was to make a textured desk surface that resembles desert sand waves. It creates perfect visual harmony between an interior design item and a plant while clients have a feeling of being outdoors.
Alisa Minkina introduced the Sagano eco furnishing line made of bamboo veneer using special technique. A veneer sheet is first cut to stripes that are then glued together. After that the wooden band is rolled into a reel that is used to create furniture. In order to build a chair from the collection, 160 meters of veneer were used.
This technique enables to give each item a different shape, creating truly unique pieces of furniture. Bamboo was chosen as the base material because of its durability and quick regeneration in nature. While working on her Sagano collection, Alisa managed to find the right balance between comfort, innovative design and eco friendliness.
The works of your designers created during their study at BHSAD became their pass to one of Europe’s most renowned furnishing fairs. Participation in the event will be a great opportunity for Yekaterina and Alisa to meet the professional community, to receive feedback from industry’s best specialists, to make connections among designers, manufacturers, and perhaps even clients. This is the right start in a business you give all your heart to. We wish our graduates all the best in Milan!
