This year, the jury of prestigious D&AD New Blood Awards in design and advertising gave special appreciation to the works submitted by the BHSAD students. Five works in two nominations received the longed-for pencils — symbols of the award. The winners study at BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Photography, BA (Hons) Illustration programs, as well as Illustration and Interactive Design & New Media courses.
The Wooden Pencil was awarded to the following projects:

Kamo is a project aimed at protecting civilians from CCTV surveillance and data analysis. It is sold through a chain of vending machines located on the premises of local companies. ‘Kamo is a political weapon of the civilians. Its ultimate goal is to support human rights. The money raised from the project will be used for public purposes.

Brand identity is basically a tool to make a brand stand out among other companies, but sometimes it separates the brand from itself. Adobe applications were remodeled with the use of motivational elements from videogames to facilitate the process of studying and modifying the company image towards a brand that promotes learning and good prospects for young talents.
It should be noted that it is the first time when the award is given to a project designed during a short-term intensive course. It took Dmitry Karpov and his students only a week to complete an almost impossible mission – create a project that would make it to the short list of a prestigious British contest.

All three animated videos tell a story of a girl. The first archetype, «Overcoming Fears», shows us a situation with noisy neighbors. The protagonist suffers from the noise, but eventually she solves the problem by knocking on the ceiling. In the next archetype, «the Quest», the girl tries to find the recently lost keys. The last scene, «Journey and Homecoming», demonstrates her dreams. The girl is cooking dinner and recollects pleasant moments from her sea voyage.

The illustrations largely deal with unexpected manifestations of art in places where it is often ignored. It is a contrast between two worlds, a comparison of different realities. The first illustration, depicting people sleeping under the «The Appearance of Christ to the People» painting by A.Ivanov is a metaphor for a journey and homecoming. The second, an old woman playing violin in the metro, symbolizes a quest, while the third, showing us a dancer in a metro train, represents rebirth.
The Graphite Pencil was awarded to The New Black project.

The latest Adobe Creative Cloud update named The New Black is downloaded alongside a dynamic visual system consisting of smallest elements devoid of images or color. The aim of such approach is to stimulate creative workers to use their creative thinking.
