BHSAD launches new BA (Hons) Design Crafts: Jewellery programme

This year BHSAD launches new BA (Hons) Design Crafts: Jewellery programme that starts in September. The course leader Angus Colvin explained the specifics of the course and the new value of jewellery design.

«BA (Hons) Design Crafts: Jewellery is growing from the popularity of the CPD programme, jewellery has been a very popular discipline in Russia and we want to give our students the opportunity to really deepen their understanding of jewellery design and what jewellery is.

Jewellery may not necessarily be what you traditionally think it is, it can be many things, it can be conceptual and it can be quite challenging, or it can be traditional. So the course here at BHSAD aims at training jewellery designers in both. We want to separate the craft element from the design element, so that jewellers can design objects that challenge traditional conceptions of jewellery, that push boundaries of jewellery, certainly within the Russian context, and maybe challenge the idea of value within jewellery. What is value within jewellery? Value can be many things, it can be precious stones, it can be precious metals, but in terms of design what is value. We see designed objects become more and more valuable because of what the designer puts into them, And we want to channel that into jewellery.

So here we offer students all of the traditional skills of the jeweller, but we also want to separate that from the jewellery designer who's someone who challenges traditional conceptions, who challenges traditional value systems, who maybe challenges the idea of what jewellery is. He poses questions like is jewellery external, internal, what happens if I swallow that ring, what happens if I create value in an object that traditionally does not have value and use that as body adornment. We want to push jewellery design as something that really reflects society, poses questions and makes social comments».
