Underbelly is a vulnerable or weak part, which is normally hidden. Shame makes us feel vulnerable, but through acceptance of our inner vulnerability, we can actually fight the shame. We extremely need it, because shame is toxic. Jungian analysts call shame the swampland of the soul. We all are going to walk in. The purpose is not to walk in and construct a home and live there. The purpose is to put on some galoshes — and walk through and find our way around. Everyone has experienced it, it is “an unspoken epidemic”.
Having exclusively negative connotation (in comparison with guilt, which could has a positive consequences), shame became an extremely interesting topic for my artistic research, due to the fact it is a challenge for me - to meet something, which is not easy to work with at least because of the human factor.
This project is intended to explore this feeling deeply, expose the face of shame, the nature of shame and the way it works. As any research, this one had a huge need in volunteers, without whom objective result would never have been reached. Thirty two people examined their attitude with shame and I collected their experience in order to evaluate it, adding my own in order to be fair as an artist.
