Graduate of BA (Hons) Photography
My choice of BA (Hons) Photography programme wasn’t random — I always loved drawing and wanted to study either graphic design or architecture. But then I discovered photography and decided to apply for the BA programme at the BHSAD. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I’d succeed — I knew next to nothing about the technicalities of photography and my shots were very bad, but I still got selected.
At the BHSAD we learned everything on practice. It wasn’t easy, some things you had to learn on your own, but in the end this approach helped develop self-discipline. When I was still studying, I started doing some freelance work for AfishaDaily, The Village and Wonderzine.
Then I had an opportunity to do a master’s degree abroad. That is how I ended up in Milan, where I’ve been living for 2,5 years now. I studied at MA Brand Management and Communication programme at IED, but then realized I want to work in creative industries. It was difficult to find a job — my Italian was very basic, but I didn’t want to go back to Moscow either.
Around that time curious.ru was launched and they were looking for a photo editor. This was a great opportunity for me. Later I managed to find an internship as a graphic designer at the creative agency And’studio here in Milan, at first it was difficult because I didn’t know the language and didn’t have enough experience. Because it is a small agency, I had to do a lot of different things. At the moment I continue working as a photo editor curious.ru and have a full-time position at the agency.
The BHSAD taught me to work in an international environment and in different adjacent fields. If I had an opportunity to do the course again, I would. It isn’t easy to find such creative atmosphere and inspiring tutors in universities in Russia.
