About the course
This programme is a first step for students applying to Foundation Art & Design and British degree programmes. It allows students to adapt to the intensive curriculum and the British system of creative education and provides high-quality specialised training.
This is a skills-led programme that allows students to become confident in a range of technical disciplines that underpin the many different aspects of contemporary art and design. Students develop skills in drawing, printmaking, fabric manipulation, digital imaging, photography, video editing, 3D making, casting etc.
Importantly, the programme develops the students’ technical proficiency across a range of key workshops equipping them with the practical skills to progress to the more ideas-led Foundation programme. Those who successfully complete the programme will be offered a place on Foundation Art & Design programme.
Language of delivery – English and Russian. Written handouts and presentations are in English. Recommended level of English skills at the point of entry – intermediate (approximately 5.0 IELTS).

Programme Structure
Drawing and the Expanded Field
This module develops students’ understanding of the formal elements of drawing and visual language. Through working with a range of scales and materials, a variety of techniques, process and methods are explored to develop the students observational and experimental drawing skills. Drawing is an essential component of the programme and the skills gained in this module inform and underpin all the different areas of practice within Art and Design.
Contextual and Critical Understanding
During this module students gain an understanding of the key points in art and design history and how these have been shaped by the social and political landscape of the time. The module is delivered through a series of lectures and practical tasks. Through undertaking these tasks students develop their research and presentation skills.
Developing Practical Skills in Art and Design
This module gives the students and opportunity to work across different technical environments. They develop their technical proficiency across a range of key workshops equipping them with the practical skills that will underpin their future art and design practices.
Development and Extension
During this module students have the opportunity to refine practical techniques that they have explored previously to a much more advanced level. Students are supported in the development of their individual projects through a series of tutorials and group critiques within the studio. Students learn to work independently and resourcefully throughout this period and the resolved final outcomes are exhibited in the end of year public exhibition.

How to apply

Entry requirements
To enroll in the course, you need to send a motivational essay (up to 200 words) and indicate examples of your creative work in digital format (link to Google document). In some cases, after reviewing the portfolio by the curator, you may be invited for an interview. We will be interested to know what influence the creative activity of designers and artists has on you, who do you focus on and why, what is the main motivating factor for getting an education in the creative field.
At the beginning of the school year, students of the programme will have a test in English to obtain results according to the future plan.
